Sustainable BioPellets for Madagascar

An alternative fuel to the environmentally harmful charcoal?

That's exactly what our grass pellets are about. Together with locals we protect the environment in Madagascar!

Crowdfunding-financing period

In Madagascar, where most cooking is done with wood and charcoal, forests and species are rapidly disappearing. What remains is eroded soil and people are beginning to suffer from hunger. We have developed an alternative fuel to the environmentally harmful charcoal to stop the dramatic decline of the Malagasy forest!

About the project

What is the project about?

With your contribution we finance for our pilot project in Madagascar: A pellet factory with chopper, hammer mill and pellet press to produce pellets from the abundant Miscanthus grass to replace the fuel wood and charcoal for cooking. The sustainable energy supply is provided by solar energy. In addition to the production of the BioPellets, energy-efficient stoves specially optimized for the use of the pellets are made from local resources.

According to WWF reports, in Madagascar there is less than 10% of the original forest area left, this is why we have to act now and replace the fuel wood and charcoal for cooking to protect the remaining forest cover.

What are the goals and who is the target group?

We want to protect the Malagasy forest and its species of which 90% are endemic!

With your donation you can support us. In addition to the production facility, we finance efficient and low-pollution stoves from local resources to use the pellets.

In this way we would like to supply 750 households with stoves and pellets already in the first year.

Why should someone support this project?

Besides preserving the forests, we can make the soil in Madagascar fertile again.

In doing so, we preserve and promote the biodiversity that makes the country so unique and beautiful.

In addition, your donation prevents deadly respiratory diseases and famine for many local families, because the BioPellets are an all-rounder. Their production and the harvesting of the grass creates many jobs. By charring in our stoves, the BioPellets provide a safe and clean source of energy for daily cooking and then serve as soil fertilizer (Terra Preta). This opens the possibility for new crops and food cultivation.

But not only that: by building a green energy and production cycle, we are establishing a sustainable system that leads to high CO2 savings. So you are part of a greener and lower CO2 future. And we will all feel this positively.

What happens with the money if the financing is successful?

A test stand for testing the stove models and a pellet mill have already been put into operation. We have also been promised a production site in Madagascar, a container for transport and a hammer mill.

However, the components for energy supply are the most expensive. We can only manage the purchase of the entire photovoltaic system with your help. Afterwards the costly shipment to Madagascar will take place.

In addition, we want to supply several hundred households with our stoves.

If you support us beyond our expectations, we can also provide solar energy for the neighboring community and expand our stove production locally.

Who is behind the project?

We are a volunteer group of students from the University of Applied Sciences and the University of Düsseldorf and experienced development workers. We bundle our enthusiasm in the non-profit UG BioPelletsEnergy and work together with the association Eine-Welt-Labor. This is the union of young and old. Among other things, it includes the years of commitment of the Malagasy student association AJPER and the experience of the association Lernen-Helfen-Leben e.V., which was founded over 30 years ago for development aid in Africa. Without the close cooperation with AJPER in Madagascar, implementation with the people would not be possible.

The Bio pellets will be produced with a pellet press powered by renewable energy and will be distributed by small regional traders and sold for a lower cost than the environmentally harmful charcoal. The waste of the cooking process (the carbonized pellets) can be spread as fertilizer for agricultural use. The goal is to establish the circle of harvesting and delivery of the miscanthus grass, the pellet production and the distribution of the pellets as a new business model in Madagascar for the Malagasy people. After the successful start of our pilot project we will be eligible to receive start-up fundings though international funds for environmental protection for further pellet production sites to be managed by Malagasy entrepreneurs. That way the pellet production can be expanded throughout the country so that the Bio Pellets can reach as many remote regions as possible to make a real impact in Madagascar!
